About us
The Centre for Sociocognitive Discourse Studies was established at MSLU to study the communicative behaviour of the participants of communication, determined by the cognitive features of a person and the social structure of the world. The uniqueness of the SCoDis Centre is due to the fact that the research is carried out from the standpoint of sociocognitive linguistics, which takes into account, on the one hand, universal and individual features of human cognition of the world (e.g., selectivity of attention, metaphorical thinking, the importance of physical experience in understanding abstract entities, brain plasticity), and on the other hand, social factors of communication (stereotypes, social identity, social relations, roles and values). Special attention is paid to the polymodality of communication, which combines different modes of verbal and non-verbal communication – spoken and written speech, gestures, postures, facial expressions, images, etc. The Centre also conducts research on sign languages.
