About us
Founded at MSLU in 2000 for comprehensive research in the field of linguistic gender studies. At present, in addition to studying gender specifics of language and communication, the research unit is engaged in the development of a comprehensive methodological approach to the study of various aspects of institutional professional communication (gender, status, age, etc.).
The research is based both on the theoretical provisions of cognitive linguistics and on the methodology of social constructivism, which considers language as a tool for accessing knowledge about non-linguistic objects.
Currently, the focus is on the study of various types of institutional discourse, especially scientific, economic, legal, and media discourse in different languages and cultures, as well as the study of communicative strategies associated with the manifestation of communicators’ identity.
The laboratory’s activity is not only focused on research work. Based on the results of the conducted research the laboratory staff developed training courses (on gender issues and cognitive linguistics, etc.), which were successfully tested at the university.
The laboratory staff has extensive experience in organising and conducting scientific conferences, seminars, schools, within the framework of which scientific contacts are established, scientific information and knowledge are exchanged, and wide opportunities are provided for mastering and applying research skills.
In addition, the laboratory provides advisory assistance to novice researchers, including consultations on the structure of a research paper, methods of collecting and analysing linguistic material, and research methodology.
